Windows 11 is an obvious successor to the now widespread Windows 10 operating system. Microsoft had previously planned to update Windows 10 with two major updates, keeping the nickname “10”. However, Windows 11 is a makeover that Microsoft could have updated without changing the name.
There aren’t many changes, but they’re worth upgrading. The look has a transparent glass feel that is smooth to the touch. The start menu is centered and gives you focus, the corners are circled a bit, then there is the ‘Snap’ function which makes multitasking a lot easier. You can now use Android apps on a Windows 11 PC, and Microsoft Team is now built into the operating system.
Many ask whether their PC meets the requirements for installing Windows 11 on a Windows 7, 8 or Windows 10 PC. So I’ve listed the hardware requirements for the new operating system below.
What are the hardware requirements for Windows 11?
Windows 1o was designed to run on older hardware, which Windows 11 does not because it requires comparatively new hardware so it cannot be installed on older PCs. Computers sold in 2019 or later will work on Windows 11 with a few exceptions.
7th generation Intel Core processors are not compatible with Windows 11, nor are PCs equipped with AMD Zen 1 processors. As a result, computers purchased in 2016 or earlier will most likely not receive Windows 11.
Windows 11 also requires a hardware security element called Trusted Platform Module or TPM along with Secure Boot and UEFI firmware (no legacy BIOS allowed). Since PCs built since 2015 have TPM 2.0 support, don’t worry. You may need to enable it in firmware settings.
The following are the hardware requirements for Windows 11:
Processor: 1 GHz or faster with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or SoC.
Warehouse: at least 64 GB of available space
R.A.M: at least 4 GB
Graphic card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or higher, with a WDDM 2.0 driver
Display: High definition display (720p), 9 ″ or larger monitor, 8 bits per color channel
Security: TPM version 2.0, UEFI firmware, Secure Boot capable
You obviously need an internet connection to get the latest Windows 11 updates. To take full advantage of Windows 11 (or any other Windows), you need a Microsoft account and an active internet connection.
PC health check app
If you don’t know the specs of your PC, Microsoft has a quick fix for you. The PC Health Check app will help you know whether your PC is suitable for Windows 11 or not. First, download the PC Health Check app, which is a Windows Installer package that is around 13MB in size. Once it’s downloaded, launch it and click “Check Now”. If your PC is Windows 11 compatible, you will see a pop-up message saying “This PC can run Windows 11”.
When can I download Windows 11?
According to Microsoft, the official release of Windows 11 – known as General Availability or GA – will be available on new hardware in late 2021, likely October 2021. This time could extend to 2022. In addition, any PC with a licensed Windows 10 can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. So far, Microsoft has not announced prices for the retail editions of Windows 11. You can download preview builds of Windows 11 from the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft terminology for beta mode.
